In this paper, an analyses is made on problems of the growth of numbers of cities and urban development in China since mid-1980s, which leads to the result that urban development in China should not pursue in blindness the growth of numbers of cities, nor the expansion of land for urban construction, nor be at the cost of benefits of farmers. Instead, it should take into consideration the national condition of China and adopt a way of sustainable development, saving resources, protecting environment, optimizing population and industrial structures, enhancing urban functions and infrastructure construction in urban areas, so as to accelerate the solution of the problems of farmer, agriculture and countryside.
